Just one goal in his first ten English top division games this season had plenty of questioning if Dominic Calvert-Lewin's best days were in the past.

But, a mere four weeks later, he has become the hottest striker in England after netting 7 goals in 6 back-to-back games.

His latest strike, in a stalemate against Sunderland, elevated his season's haul to eight, seeing him become the top English goalscorer in the Premier League this term.

A Remarkable Resurgence

The 28-year-old signed for Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, after a nine-year period with Everton that was marred by injuries in its closing stages.

But, the data underpinning his revival in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 system are truly remarkable.

His six-match scoring run places him in exclusive company as just the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League matches.

To provide context, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run of this length - his top is two separate five-match runs.

And the only English striker to better Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who produced an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Purple Patch?

Why has Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in this period? A previous opponent's manager described it succinctly.

"He has the impeccable timing," the manager said. "He's clever and a genuinely top-class striker and he found the timing to arrive just on time."

The ex- Sheffield United player has eleven England appearances, netting four goals, but has not featured for the country since the last European Championship.

"He looks as in shape as he has in a considerable period," one remarked. "If he sustains this level of form... then he's going to be in a conversation for a World Cup place."
