The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals ten times the healthy limit recommended by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, representing 15-20x exceeding acceptable standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous smog that engulfs the city as the cold season sets in.

Yet recently, the newly elected regional government approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants originating in neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the city have continued as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around Diwali, the amount of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was once considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Factors

This crisis in the capital is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to multiple studies.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can result in oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k early fatalities annually in the city.
